How does aesthetic appearance, down to the gleam of a look, express the material and historical richness of a world, and why does recognition between subjects pass through the thing?

Dominique Pagani starts from the text of the Phenomenology of Spirit on the end of the religion of art: the Greek works reach us like fruits detached from the tree, offered by a girl who synthesizes their conditions in the gleam of her eye. He compares this text to the preface of Marx's Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy, then fills the gap with Proust: the gleam in the girl's look contains her whole life, down to her social class. He then defines aesthetics as the domain of surface and shows, with the Hegelian hierarchy of the arts, that interiority is an external world become interior. He moves on to recognition: with Lacan, Merleau-Ponty and Hölderlin, he shows that the relation between subjects is accomplished through an object that has a symbolic function. The answers to questions concern the fluidification of 'isms', presence and the now, the idea as realized concept, the readings of Hegel by Lenin, Marx and Althusser, the relation between order and freedom, and the critique of the accusation of totalitarianism leveled against Hegel. He concludes that the interior expresses itself and that the appearance of the world is produced, not undergone.
