#4.7 Angélique (by Nerval)

#4.7 Angélique (de Nerval)

Open on YouTube

What does the ending of Nerval's Angélique reveal, where the walk that moves away from Rousseau's tomb closes into a loop, and is this necessity of the text merely personal or universal?

Dominique Pagani resumes the reading of Angélique at the point where the narrator and Sylvain leave Rousseau's tomb. As soon as one moves away from it, the setting opposes the walk: rain, ruts, thistles, detours. He relates this phenomenon to immanent symbolism and to the image of a center of gravity that deforms space. He then reads the last page: the journey closes on the Strasbourg railway, Nerval names the Odyssey and evokes a descent into hell. The final digressions confirm this backdrop: carnage, tombs, the underworld. A question from the audience asks whether this necessity remains particular to Nerval. He answers by distinguishing determinability and determination, then moves to the universal: the maternal function of being carried (Isis, the end of Isis), the truth of aesthetic illusion, and Rousseau's tomb as the tomb of the Social Contract. He ends on Daedalus, hubris, and the trial of technology.
