#4.2 Angélique (by Nerval)

#4.2 Angélique (de Nerval)

Open on YouTube

Is Angélique a disjointed text, or does it obey, beneath its digressions, a logic that is that of the dream?

Dominique Pagani starts from the status of Angélique: a serial published in 1850 in Le National, taken up again in Les Filles du feu, and long held to be a minor work. He sets aside the pathological reading of Nerval and opposes analysis, which is objective, to interpretation, which speaks only of the interpreter. He notes the digressions of the text and the excuses that accompany them: those concerning the plot, then those in which Nerval apologizes for being lyrical and melancholic on the day of the dead. These digressions trace a unity of time (autumn, decline), of place (the West, the mother's Valois) and of action (the march toward death), and a theme: the Renaissance against the Middle Ages, paganism against Christianity. A comparative reading of the scene of the little girls of Senlis and a dream from Aurélia shows that one is the inverted image of the other, as in a mirror. He concludes that reality is absorbed into Nervalian speech and that Angélique has the logic of a reported dream.
