How should we read Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit in light of the historical upheaval and the Romantic crisis from which it emerged?

Dominique Pagani starts from a page of Gracq's Le Château d'Argol to present the Phenomenology of Spirit as a novel of formation. It was born in the "fabulous verbal ocean" of German idealism, between the French Revolution and the industrial revolution. He shows the contradiction running through this generation: on one side the rational heritage of the Enlightenment, on the other Romantic escapism, which resulted in a hecatomb of poets dead, mad, or suicided. A text with a reputation for difficulty thus has an exoteric and pedagogical aim. Answering questions from the audience, he explains the Kantian distinction between understanding and reason, Hegel's rehabilitation of the understanding (the "prodigious power of the negative") and the notion of moment. With Hölderlin and L'Aventure ambiguë, he interprets the West as the place where man, deprived of religious consolations, confronts finitude. He concludes that we remain caught in the conflict between revolution and counter-revolution and that we must think our own time.
