How can it be shown that the historical sciences have an object as rigorously determinable as that of the natural sciences?

Dominique Pagani starts from Bach's music and the expression "regular as music paper" ("réglé comme du papier à musique"): music is the only art whose expression unfolds on two quantifiable axes, pitch and duration. He then sets out the stakes: crossing what Kant held to be an unbridgeable gulf between the hard sciences and the human sciences, by distinguishing determinability, which excludes chance, from determination, which gives its cause. He superimposes a passage from Angélique and a dream from Aurélia by Nerval, and shows, through a two-entry table (buildings, light, season, voices, ages, vegetation), that the second is the first "multiplied by minus one." He then reads the opening of Lévi-Strauss's The Raw and the Cooked, where music serves as a model for the structural analysis of myths, temporal languages that transcend articulate language. He concludes that determinability is established in the historical sciences and that determination remains to be reached; the audience's questions concern aesthetic judgment and Nerval's effort to escape the personal novel.
