#4.3 Angélique (by Nerval)

#4.3 Angélique (de Nerval)

How can a literary text, that of a madman, achieve such rigor that it grounds a rationality in the human order, where Kant had separated nature and freedom by an unbridgeable abyss?

Dominique Pagani starts from the comparative reading done in the previous session: the passage about the young girls of Senlis in Angélique and a dream from Aurélia. Each feature of the second is the exact inverse of the first (autumn and spring, ruins and an enlarged room, adult and small child), which shows a predictability of the text comparable to that of an eclipse. He draws a philosophical conclusion: this rigor belongs to a rationality of the human order that Kant had glimpsed, then closed off, by separating the legislation of nature from that of freedom, before throwing a bridge across in the Critique of the Power of Judgment. He passes through Rousseau and the transition from the state of nature to the civil state, defines evil as the reintroduction of the state of nature into the civil state, then reads the youthful correspondence of Schelling, Hegel and Hölderlin. He finally returns to Angélique, whose goal is Rousseau's tomb at Ermenonville, a collective salvation opposed to the attraction of the maternal tomb. The audience's questions concern the symbolic itinerary, personal and collective evil, and chaste love in Nerval.
