What is to be done, and why does the answer require a theoretical detour through Rousseau and his conception of happiness?

Dominique Pagani starts from the question "what is to be done?". For him, this is not first of all a call to practice against theory: with Lenin, Plato and Descartes, he holds that one must make a detour through theory in order to be practical. This detour passes through Rousseau, whom he introduces via Nerval's short story Angélique and via the legend of a triangle formed by Rousseau, Henri IV and Gabrielle d'Estrées. He draws three triangles from this. The first makes the king's woman the symbol of wealth and of the commodity. The second places Rousseauian happiness as the middle term between the libertine's enjoyment and Robespierre's virtue. The third is the tripartition between the naturalist standpoint, the theological standpoint and the anthropological standpoint, which he illuminates through Lévi-Strauss. Finally, using the Platonic example of the criterion of beauty, he shows that dialectic is always ternary, and he returns to happiness as the theme that gives unity to the Enlightenment.
