#5.2 The philosopher's Odyssey: Revolutionary thought

#5.2 L’Odyssée du philosophe : La pensée révolutionnaire

Open on YouTube

Why does Hegel, the philosopher of mediation, occupy a central place in revolutionary thought from Rousseau to Lenin, and what relation does mediation have with death?

Dominique Pagani starts from the location of the session, the École normale supérieure founded by the Convention, to situate Hegel in the middle of the sequence running from Rousseau to Lenin, as the philosopher of mediation. Through Nerval and Rousseau's tomb, he goes back to Plato's Republic, which Hegel reads as the pivot of a world revolution, that of rationalism, then connects this reading to Hegel's letter on the French Revolution and to the afterword of Capital: dialectic is critical and revolutionary because it grasps the transitory character of every form. He then shows that man never has an immediate relation to nature: memory, language and the tool are the mediations that found the anthropological order, the tool being that in which labor has its permanence. Finally he links mediation to the theme of death, 'the immediate being-there of nature': man is mediation in order to escape nothingness, and the anthropological synthesis, man makes man, sublates naturalism and theology. Questions address Marx's and Lenin's relation to Hegel, Lenin's text on dreaming, and the passage from freedom to liberation.
