#5.1 bis FaceBook Live / Questions

Open on YouTube

What place does transmission hold in the pedagogical movement from the Renaissance to Rousseau, and what are the stakes of the dissolution of the separation of genres?

Dominique Pagani answers two questions from the audience raised during the previous workshop. For the first, he starts from a logical answer: pedagogy is a species of the genus transmission, and transmission is a middle term that proves essential, as in Hegel, whose dialectic is a syllogistics. He then moves to the chronological answer: the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries are two parallel critical moments, separated by the stability of Louis XIV's reign, and their emphasis on pedagogy rests on the conviction that the pedagogical is the antechamber of the political, in the line of the Platonic dialogue. For the second question, he contrasts classicism, which separates genres, with romanticism, which fuses them, and relates this separation to that of social orders and classes, then to the psyche and the madness of the romantics. He concludes by joining the two questions: the didactic work from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment aims at a political "critical mass," hence his formula of collective elitism.
