Why can memory, which Greek myth conflates with language in the figure of Mnemosyne, not go without forgetting?

Dominique Pagani starts from ancient texts on Mnemosyne, the Titaness who bears the Muses according to Hesiod and who, according to Diodorus Siculus, imposes names on all beings: the myth conflates memory and language, and places their origin in a pre-Olympian world, that of chaos, where the indeterminate precedes the determinate. He then answers a listener's questions: individual freedom presupposes institution just as speech presupposes a language that pre-exists it, and language is a collective memory. But there is a force within us that does not want to remember; hence his question: can there be memory without a gap? Schubert's trio, Pausanias's rite of drinking from Lethe then from Mnemosyne, Rimbaud's verse, and Wagner's Walküre show that memory and forgetting go together. He concludes with the recollection of the Meno and announces Hegel's first philosophy of spirit, in which memory, language, and the tool are the three powers of spirit.
