What is musical in music?

Dominique Pagani starts from the necessity of posing a question that seems self-evident. To approach it, he goes through a series of texts. First Kafka, reputed not to like music, in whom the wordless sound of the castle threatens to fulfill obscure desires. Then Goethe, poet of the plastic, whom Wagner and Hegel oppose to Schiller, closer to the musical thing; Mignon, who sings in Wilhelm Meister, embodies the spirit of music. He then opposes Chateaubriand's visual landscape to Rousseau's sonic reverie at Lake Biel, where the subject is fixed by the object. He arrives at the essence of music: Verlaine's uneven meter, a matter that is not immaterial but in permanent becoming, and consent to melodic flow.
