What place and what content should be given to desire, which philosophy has never stopped thinking about, in today's society?

Dominique Pagani starts from the question of desire, raised as a continuation of consumption, and first rejects the claimed novelty of a "theory of affects" in Lordon: since Plato, Descartes and Spinoza, desire has been the very object of philosophy. In post-Hegelian and Marxist terms, he establishes that the content of human desire is supplied both by nature and by history, in a way that is difficult to disentangle. He illustrates this historical and symbolic content with Clouscard's Traité de l'amour fou, Wagner, La Rochefoucauld and Racine's Phèdre. He then recalls that philosophy seeks sophia, the wisdom that concerns desires, and not knowledge alone. He concludes that modern, anti-Marxist philosophy of desire remains formalist, and that there is more Marxism in Proust than in this so-called radical thought.
