What is missing from the Cartesian subject in order to think the modern subject, and why do both the abstract self and the exclusive community end in destruction?

Dominique Pagani starts again from Baudelaire's La Cloche fêlée: the modern individual is not separated from society in general, but from an overly homogeneous and exclusive community, that of the church and the army, which rejects the accursed poet. He then returns to the notion of subject and follows step by step the first two Meditations of Descartes, from doubt about the sensible to the evil genius and the cogito. He recognizes in them the founding of the philosophy of the subject, but a still binary thought, thought and extension, which lacks the third modern term: the unconscious, thoughts that one does not think. Kleist, with the puppet theater, and Lévi-Strauss, with the raw and the cooked, serve to introduce this third term. He finally reads Rimbaud's Conte as a figure of destructive desire and the abstract subject, then the preface of Hegel's Elements of the Philosophy of Right on the freedom of emptiness. He concludes on two symmetrical abstractions: the abstract self and the communitarian society.
