Why is romanticism ambivalent between aesthetics and politics, and in what sense are surface, reflection and landscape more profound than the depths?

Dominique Pagani answers two questions from the audience. The first concerns the romantic retreat into aesthetics at the expense of politics. He first posits that romanticism, like everything that stands in the middle, is ambivalent, and shows this with the image of the violet point and the "extreme center". He then opposes a literature of action to a literature of evasion: he gives the political point to the French romantics and the aesthetic point to the German romantics, whose Hymns to the Night by Novalis he reads. With Plato, he examines the role of music, then asserts that the aesthetic investment must be decoupled from the political investment. The second question concerns surface and reflection. He shows that landscape is the surface of nature, produced by history, and that reflection is an interiorization externalized through praxis. He arrives at the two senses of dialectic, the critique of neopositivism, and the distinction between substance and relation.
