What does the polarity of white and red in the poetic imagination, from Chrétien de Troyes to Mallarmé and Nerval, say about our modernity?

Dominique Pagani starts from the Socratic imperative "Know thyself": to know oneself is to ask what modernity is, of which romanticism in the broad sense is the first expression. He brings together three texts as a triptych: Mallarmé's sonnet of the swan, where everything is white, a bloody vision from Aurélia, and a dream of Nerval where white is tinged with pink. He reads them as a syllogism of which pink is the middle term. He shows the depth of this polarity in the imagination (Chrétien de Troyes, Coleridge, Wagner). He then analyzes each text: the sterile purity of the narcissistic swan, the lost paradise and exile, the dismembered body and the mother, the difference of degree between normal and pathological, then the lost paradise regained in a dream. He arrives at the political: the coming crisis will force a choice between revolution and counter-revolution, between red and white, and the answers to the audience lead to the Hegelian reconciliation of presence and truth.
