What relation does the philosopher have with politics, and how do finality, negativity, mediation and death implicate one another in man?

Dominique Pagani answers questions raised after workshop 5.2. Starting from a question on Socrates and apoliticism, he shows with Plato's Seventh Letter that philosophy is born from a political failure, and that partisan engagement, if heroic, is not illegitimate, provided thought does not lock itself into the party; Merleau-Ponty's triad "the self, the true, the others" defines the philosopher. He then rehabilitates finality by inverting it: the end is not a given already there, natural or divine, it is man who assigns it to himself, and there is finality only in a finite being. He finally reads the preface to the Phenomenology of Spirit and the 1803 philosophy of spirit to show that understanding, the negative, death, mediation, language and the tool implicate one another: awareness of finitude marks the passage from natural ontology to anthropology.
