#1.8 Between crisis and war: Philosophising?

#1.8 Entre crise et guerre : Philosopher ?

Open on YouTube

What becomes of philosophy when, in place of the good, modernity posits freedom as foundation, with the negativity and possibilities of evil that this opens up?

Dominique Pagani starts from the myth of the cave, which summarizes the moments of philosophical thought: opinion, discursive knowledge, dialectic, theoria. He shows that dialectic moves from a logic of identity to a logic that integrates contradiction without violating Aristotle's principle, because contraries are temporalized. He then returns to the Socratic question "what do you call...?", born of historical crisis, and distinguishes the search for causes, left to science, from the search for meaning, which remains philosophy's task. By replacing the good with freedom, modernity extinguishes Plato's sun: this is the "black sun," with negativity, interiorization, the mal du siècle, and a power to do evil that grows with the means available. He arrives, with Hegel and Marx, at the idea that freedom has always been realized as concrete liberation, in praxis.
