Mythology and Truth

Mythologie et Vérité

Why does myth, which philosophy sought to set aside in favor of rational discourse, always come back, and what truth does it express?

Dominique Pagani starts from Kant's two questions, "what can I know?" and "what must I do?", to show that philosophy seeks rationality both in action and in self-knowledge. He defines myth as the poem of the people, oral and collective, and contrasts it with the univocal truth that Plato seeks on the model of Euclidean geometry. He then distinguishes three languages: that of the mathematician, without metaphor, that of myth, made of images, and that of the philosopher, who speaks the common language and thus remains caught up in metaphor and in the shadow-part of words. Drawing on the struggle of the titans and the gods reread by Marx, then on Lévi-Strauss and Wagner, he shows that myth expresses truths without knowing it, as the dream does for Freud. He arrives at the Greek dread of excess, with Icarus and Oedipus: myth is not only the poem of one people, it is the poem of all peoples together.
