What gives a commodity its value, and how is surplus value at the core of Marx's analysis?

Dominique Pagani starts from the difficulty specific to Marx's work: it is a theoretical synthesis that runs counter to the dominant ideology, and it was received both in the workers' movement and among intellectuals. He then takes up the distinction between use value and exchange value to state the theory of value: the value of a commodity is proportional to the socially necessary labor time required to produce it. He distinguishes wealth, whose nature is its source, from value, which arises from labor, and makes the ownership of the means of production the political stake, by way of Rousseau. He then shows that surplus value comes from a segment not paid at its value, labor power. A question from the audience on unemployment and two readings (Kurz, Friot) lead him to the internal contradiction of capital and to the announcement of a session on dialectic.
