What makes a group of men a people rather than a crowd, and why must the notion of totality be defended against the use of the word "totalitarian"?

Dominique Pagani starts from the Kantian category of quantity: totality is the synthesis of unity and plurality, and it distinguishes a people from a crowd or a heap of stones. He then reverses the concept of totalitarianism: the monstrosities grouped under this name are those of a part crushing the whole, and this concept serves to disqualify any opposition to capitalism. Answering questions from the audience, he shows that the political animal lives a contradiction between instinct and institution, and takes up from Rousseau the passage from natural liberty to civil liberty and from possession to property founded on recognition, whereas the state of nature is the reign of force. He applies these distinctions to popular music as opposed to market music, to racism linked to unemployment, then to identity, which is built in time and difference. He arrives at mutual recognition as the common principle of a people, and at philosophy as the question of purpose and end.
