Why has Hegel disappeared from the 'radar screens' of philosophical debate?

Dominique Pagani answers the question of Hegel's disappearance with another: how did Hegel appear? He shows that his diffusion in the French university dates from the postwar period and is linked to Marxism. He traces the passage of the young Marx, a naturalist and Feuerbachian, to a Marx who pays homage to idealism and to praxis. He draws three philosophical positions from this: nature, supernature, and 'man makes man.' He then opposes right-wing anti-Hegelianism and left-wing anti-Hegelianism, especially Althusser's, to Lenin's reading of Hegel. He concludes that Hegel's presence depends on the relation between Hegel and Marx, and that the disjunction of the two accompanies the retreat of the popular classes.
