Education: can the Beautiful be learned?

Education : le Beau s'apprend-il ?

Is beauty a matter of individual taste, or can it be learned through an education that brings us into contact with works of art?

Dominique Pagani starts from the adage "there's no accounting for taste." He sees in it a relativism that gives the illusion of choice while the market exposes young people to only one kind of music. With Kant, he distinguishes the determinant judgment from the reflective judgment: aesthetic pleasure reveals a desire we are unaware of, and the object knows more about us than we do ourselves. He then shows that natural beauty is a recent invention, contemporary with the revolutions of the eighteenth century, and that it is only an appearance: what we love in it is something of man that had been forgotten. He then separates the beautiful from the good (Buchenwald, Carl Orff) but brings it close to the true: the beautiful expresses a displaced truth, in the sense in which Freud speaks of displacement in dreams. The session ends with praise of imperfection and measure, homage to popular art which pop music has replaced, and then the presentation of Marcel Dhièvre's Petit Paris.
