#6.2 • The Logic of the Subject in the face of the reconstitution of Nazism

#6.2 • La Logique du Sujet face à la reconstitution du nazisme

Open on YouTube

In what way does a logic of the subject allow us to think and combat the current reconstitution of Nazism, whose common ground is naturalism?

Dominique Pagani starts from current events: the coup d'État in Bolivia, the rise of the far right in Europe, and the amnesia maintained around Nazism. He then connects this danger to philosophy: the structuralism of Lévi-Strauss and Althusser evacuated the subject. To distinguish subject from object, he introduces the substantial, alienation, and the symbolic order (signal, sign, pact). The common ground between the negation of the subject and Nazism is naturalism. He opposes to it the Kantian distinction between legislation by nature and legislation by freedom, then the Hegelian critique of negative freedom, which ends in a "fury of destruction." The audience's questions lead him to show that the symbolic order inscribes in the body a demand for recognition as a free being, up to the account of Genesis.
