#5.4 Nature or Landscape?

#5.4 Nature ou Paysage ?

Are nature and landscape the same thing, or is landscape merely a surface onto which the subject projects its fantasies?

Dominique Pagani begins with the distinction between arts of space and arts of time, then with the mental experiment of a glass of water plunged into a sunset over the sea: landscape is only a surface, a spectacle that disappears as soon as one tries to grasp it. He distinguishes nature, the object of a physics that transgresses the surface, from landscape, which exists only for someone, and points out that the etymology (paese, peasant, campagne) already refers to human labor. He explains why philosophy must raise natural language, which has nothing natural about it and is shot through with finalities, to the rigor of the concept. He compares three paintings, from Poussin to Friedrich, and two texts, Chateaubriand's Atala and Rousseau's fifth walk: classicism escapes from nature into the city, romanticism escapes from the city into a wild, nocturnal nature. He arrives at the thesis that the external world, taken as surface, is a screen onto which the subject projects itself, as shown by the fantasmatic, prenatal logic of Rousseau's reverie.
