#4 Benefits and harms of amnesia...

How does memory, which retains and names, confront the indeterminacy of origins, and how can one memory overdetermine others?

Dominique Pagani begins with a reminder about the proper use of rote learning, then returns to the Arte documentary on the discovery of Djebel Irhoud. From this he draws a reflection on naming, on the dialectic of the continuous and the discontinuous, and on the notion of threshold: there is no pure origin, but an "always already complex". He then reads the two poems Mnemosyne by Hölderlin. To retain is a burden of logs on the shoulders, facing pre-Olympian chaos, yet the Olympian order should not be idealized either. With Prometheus, Aeschylus and Marx, mortals, who know they will die, become those through whom "things change": hominization continues. He arrives at the concept of overdetermination, which he illuminates through Proust, Deleuze's lecture on Dostoevsky, and Gracq's The Opposing Shore.
