Why go through Nerval and the concept of modernity to think the historical present, dominated by capital?

Dominique Pagani responds to objections: why turn to a romantic of 1840, mad and suicidal, to criticize the historical present? He answers that Nerval is exemplary of modernity and its impasses, through his relation to Rousseau and to Angélique, which leads to Rousseau's tomb and the social contract. To those who suspect him of aestheticism, he recalls that Marx constantly cites Shakespeare and the Bible, that he analyzes myth, and that Hegel subsumes aesthetics into the political. He then periodizes modernity between the industrial revolution and the French Revolution, and recognizes it in the mixing of genres, which answers to the telescoping of classes. He arrives at the emergence of the individual, defined with Hegel as the particular reflected on itself and raised to the universal, against the return to enclosure in ontological identities.
