What relation does music have with time, with language and, in Rousseau, with writing?

Dominique Pagani starts from Rousseau as copyist and composer of music, who refuses worldly glory after the success of Le Devin du village. He shows that Rousseau's writing is made of sounds rather than colors, and reads the fifth walk, where the sound of water extinguishes the visual and leads back to the bond with the mother. He draws from this a thesis about music: the intra-uterine state knows no time, and music enters into time in order to leave it, in Lévi-Strauss's phrase; in Hegel, it crowns the system of the arts as pure temporality. Against Bergson's hostility to language, he defends a dialectical complicity between language and music, illustrated by children's babbling and the language of the birds in Siegfried, and he opposes music and mathematics as two renunciations of the concept. He arrives at the fusion of genres characteristic of modernity, to which Rousseau gives the answer by unifying poetry and prose.
