Hegel and the yellow vests (Part 1)

Hegel et les gilets jaunes (1ère partie)

Does the yellow vests movement mark, in light of Hegel and Marx, the return of the social against the societal, and what then becomes of the thesis of the end of history?

The session begins with the exposition of the guest philosopher, who reads the yellow vests movement in Hegelian terms: a spatial and temporal hapax, a history without heroes, then his political model of a society first liberal and then solidary, borne by the secular nation-state and by institution rather than by participation. Dominique Pagani responds with two figures, Shakespeare and Marx's old mole and the Gospel's rejected stone: a popular France believed asleep returns to the scene. A filmed testimony of a yellow vest supports the thesis of the return of the social against the societal and against communities. He then contests the idea that freedom would be given from the outset: it is produced by history, as shown by paragraph 185 of the Elements of the Philosophy of Right. Questions from the audience clarify the distinction between the social and the societal in Hegel and Marx, secularism and the supreme being, and pedagogy. The session culminates in the difference between the end of history in Hegel and the end of prehistory in Marx, equalization remaining an infinite task.
