Are we really in a consumer society, and do we consume too much?

Dominique Pagani starts from a thesis of Michel Clouscard: we are not in a consumer society. Against a consensus running from Soral to Lordon, he takes up Clouscard's distinction between consumer goods and equipment goods. He then describes a sequence: collective equipment, household equipment, then playful, marginal, libidinal consumption reserved for a privileged class. Excess consumption is measured against what the productive forces of the time allow, not against the past. He concludes that the majority does not consume enough and that the real problem is that of planning: generalized degrowth runs in the same direction as the employers' investment strike.
