Dominique Pagani approaches fascism through the Socratic question "what do you call fascism?". He opposes the trivialisation of the word and Arendt's concept of totalitarianism, which puts communism and Nazism on the same level1. He identifies several of its features: hostility to the French Revolution, which he reads in Achim von Arnim, antisemitism, hatred of the State and anticommunism, against a background of economic crisis. As early as 2014, he sees it first of all as a reaction against social advances2. He draws above all on Clouscard's Néo-fascisme et idéologie du désir: fascism returns through the liberal-libertarian left that came out of May 68. The resentment of the petty bourgeoisie at the sight of the worker who is getting ahead is its breeding ground3. From 2024 onward, he distinguishes two fascisms: local identitarian fascisms and a global Atlanticist fascism. The latter returns "under the flag of freedom", in Thomas Mann's words, and is measured by its victims4. For him, Bardella's rallying to NATO marks their fusion, which Clouscard foretold in 1976, and war is fascism's worst expression5.
