Why does Socrates choose Xanthippe, the shrew, and refuse Alcibiades, the most beautiful man in Athens?

Dominique Pagani starts from an audience question about Xanthippe, Socrates' wife, notoriously impossible, and about the idea of woman as Pandora. He relates the assignment of women to the tasks of nature to the first social division of labor according to Marx, which also explains why the contestation of the law of the city comes from Antigone. He then reads Socrates' refusal of Alcibiades with Clouscard: Alcibiades' seduction is that of the attributes of the dominant, like jeans become an emblem of the establishment. He shows that, in archaic society, the wife is separated from love and linked to the impure. For the Greeks, the city is a recourse against nature and the infinite, whereas the moderns seek the infinite. He concludes that Xanthippe is the woman of traditional society, which is not the site of amorous stakes.
