What is a concerto, and what does the slow movement of Tchaikovsky's Concerto No. 1 reveal about Russian music?

Dominique Pagani starts from the definition of the concerto as a genre: a solo instrument set against the tutti of the orchestra. He then distinguishes two styles within this genre: the concertante concerto of the Baroque era, a conversation between honest people in the image of the Ancien Régime, and the great romantic concerto, in which the virtuoso soloist opposes the orchestra in an almost conflictual way. He places Tchaikovsky within the Russian school, which came late to the classical repertoire, and draws a parallel between Russians and Americans: dancing peoples, they share a rhythmic obsession linked to great spaces to be carved up. He defends Tchaikovsky against the charge of bad taste by relying on Stravinsky's judgment. He arrives at the sonata form and its central slow movement, which he plays.
