How does music enter into time only to leave it, bringing back the past to the point of touching a kind of eternity?

Dominique Pagani starts from a formula of Lévi-Strauss: music only enters into time in order to leave it. After repetition, he examines a second aspect, which school grammar illuminates through the opposition between the simple past and the imperfect tense: it is a matter of bringing the past back into duration. He shows this through Proust, first with a sentence about Madame de Guermantes, then with the scene in Swann's Way where the little phrase from Vinteuil's sonata brings back to Swann the whole time of his love for Odette. He reads in it a victory over death in an author who did not believe in eternal life: "we hold as hostage these divine captives." He ends by playing a Schubert trio whose theme returns after having been forgotten, like Vinteuil's phrase.
