What is a people, and how does one distinguish the popular from the populist, from pop music, and from « people » culture?

Dominique Pagani starts from a question about the people, which he approaches through music: popular music expresses the singularity of a geographical here and a historical now, whereas pop music, broadcast from above, standardizes listening throughout the world. He draws from this that the words people, nation, and « people » (in the celebrity sense) are trapped. He then draws on Rousseau's Social Contract: the people is that which recognizes itself in the contract, at once governing and governed, without reference to color or biology. The example of Africa shows him that supposed ethnic differences in fact conceal economic functions within a single society. He finally denounces cantonization and abstraction in power, with the myth of Procrustes and the Hegelian reading of the Terror, and concludes that since the French Revolution the people has united all those who recognize themselves in the general will.
