#5.3 bis FaceBookLive / Questions

Open on YouTube

What distinguishes the philosophical question "what do you call...?" from the scientific question "what is it?", and how does the sign-meaning pair separate from the cause-effect pair?

Dominique Pagani answers live questions asked after the December 21 workshop. He starts from the Socratic question "what do you call...?": it moves from monologue to dialogue and does not presuppose the existence of the thing, whereas "what is it?" bears only on essence. He then explains why a science is defined by its object without defining that object itself: it needs a proper object, laws, and the possibility of measurement. He shows that extending the model y = f(x) to the subject eliminates freedom, and thus the question "what must I do?". With the picnic table, he establishes that definition belongs to a function decided by a subject, and that it implies form, end, meaning, and sign. He takes up Kant's distinction between legislation by nature and legislation by freedom, then applies it to economics: productive forces alone do not suffice to define a political regime, which depends on relations of production.
