How can we think the dialectic between the security of the hinterland and the peril of the edge, and what does it mean to stand on a "perpetuated edge"?

Dominique Pagani begins from the continuity of his discourse since his first cycle, "Entre crises et guerres philosopher." He recalls the two carnages that frame the Odyssey, the sack of Troy and the massacre of the suitors. He then defines dialectic by internal contradiction and situates the edge as a switching between two poles: the security of the hinterland and exposure to the other. Kafka's The Burrow and In Our Synagogue show that excessive security becomes lethal and imposes a back-and-forth, as illustrated too by the peaceful Germany from which Nazism arose. With Vinteuil's little phrase in Swann's Way, he shows conversely a subject who chooses to remain on the edge and to perpetuate it. He concludes that the measure between security and edge must be at the center of politics, then answers questions from the audience on the symbolic order, on the present as edge in Gramsci, on the West, and on the reign of the image.
