What separates a "world before" from a "world after", and is the health crisis a revolution or the acceleration of trends already at work?

Dominique Pagani starts from Goethe's remark about Voltaire and Rousseau and a restaurant owner's observation: a crisis is not a rupture but the acceleration of trends already present. He contrasts true historical breaks, such as the French Revolution, with advertising "revolutions" and "reforms", which he calls counter-revolution. He then reads two prefaces by Hegel: the one from the Philosophy of Right against perpetual novelty, then the one from the Phenomenology of Spirit on silent evolution and the qualitative leap, which he applies to Voltaire and Rousseau. He recalls that change is a neutral term and that the word "revolution" has also served reaction. He arrives at a call to memory: the economic crisis announced since 2008 precedes Covid, and what presents itself as new takes up the worst of the world as it has always been.
