How does Mallarmé, a poet reputed to be aristocratic and hermetic, stage the class struggle and the condition of the working class in "Conflit"?

Dominique Pagani starts from the prose Mallarmé, whom he prefers to the verse Mallarmé, and situates him within the movement of poetic prose opened by Baudelaire and prepared by Nerval. He presents "Conflit," the first of the "Variations sur un sujet," giving its context: the suburban house where the poet used to contemplate the sunset is invaded by a railway construction site. He then reads the text and comments on its stages: the poet's hostility toward the workers, the insult from a drunken worker and the "class struggle on the lawn," then the final reversal, in which the poet keeps watch over the sleeping workers and recognizes in them the share of the sacred in existence. He concludes that this poet, said to be reactionary, wrote one of the most social and generous texts of the end of the century.
