Is history a subject matter, and whose history, of what, do we make?

Dominique Pagani starts from an ambiguity in the word "matter": it designates both the object studied and the discipline that studies it. With writing, which marks the end of prehistory, object and discipline merge: history begins when it is written, and it is first written for the pharaoh, not for the truth. He distinguishes history from time in general and from natural evolution. With surveys, a novel by Hermann Kant, a poem by Brecht, and the example of space conquest, he raises the question of whose history is being made. Against relativism, he affirms humanity as a universal to be constructed, defined by a function and not by observation. He concludes with Hegel's thesis: history has a meaning, and that meaning is freedom, from the Oriental "only one is free" to the modern "all are free."
