Does John Lewis's music belong to classical or to jazz, and is jazz not the true classical music of the twentieth century?

Dominique Pagani starts from a thesis he says he takes on himself: jazz might be the only true classical music of the twentieth century. He defines the classical as what is taught in the classroom, a heritage. He then observes that the avant-gardes after the Vienna school left a void with the general public, whereas even Bach's most learned works remain in tune with popular structures. Jazz occupies this void, since it holds together both the popular bass and the most sophisticated avant-garde. He shows this with the "third stream" of John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet, where the question "classical or jazz?" becomes undecidable. He ends with Lennie Tristano's Requiem for Charlie Parker, which moves from a Schumann-like prelude to the archaic essence of the blues.
