Is farniente, doing nothing, a value, and what is it worth depending on the situation of the one who indulges in it?

The session starts from a question about farniente: is it possible to do nothing, and how does one pass from doing nothing to what to do? Dominique Pagani first distinguishes rest stolen from labor from the idleness of one who has never done anything. He opposes to Rousseau's farniente Pascal's thesis on diversion, which explains desire by what one is fleeing, the anguish of death, and in whom he sees an anticipation of Hegel. He then shows that Rousseau prescribes manual labor for Émile and makes farniente a sovereign good only when one must escape the nightmare of persecution, as on the Île Saint-Pierre. He concludes by recommending farniente against the reign of servitude and domination, and against the voluntary exhaustion of jogging.
