Open on YouTube

What should be understood by "artificial intelligence," and what separates a machine that simulates intelligence from a being who speaks, doubts, and sets itself ends?

Dominique Pagani begins with three anecdotes: Diderot's orangutan ("speak, and I baptize you"), Kant's mechanical nightingale, and the crackling on the telephone in Kafka's The Castle. He thus shows that the question of artificial intelligence continues his reflection on the link between the natural sciences and the historical sciences. A guest researcher then presents what artificial intelligence is from the inside: definitions, symbolic and connectionist approaches, supervised learning, the distinction between correlation and causality. The discussion connects these notions to Hume and Kant, to the myth of the artificial man, to the creation of Adam, and to the double articulation of language, then to the passage from signal to sign in the scientific use of machine learning. Questions from the audience concern doubt, which Pagani presents as a minus that is a plus (surplus value, Prometheus, Hölderlin), the difference between understanding and reason, the faculty of ends, and the purpose of the designers, which leads to the question of labor and productivity gains.
